B S Garg

Dr. Garg, MD, Ph D, is Secretary Kasturba Health Society, Ex-Dean, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram. He is also Director of the Dr. Sushila Nayar School of Public Health and Director of the WHO Collaborative Centre for Research & Training in Community Based Maternal, Newborn & Child Health. He received the Best Teacher award from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik for the year 2005-6, Commonwealth Medical Fellowship for one year at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK in 1989-1990, Fellowship of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (2003), Fellowship of Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine (1997), Fellowship of Indian Public Health Association (1994) & Fellowship of Indian Society for Malaria & Other Communicable Diseases (1987). He was also bestowed with the Sir Shriram Memorial Award ( by NAMS), Dhanwantari Oration(2003 & Dr. Harcharan Singh Oration (2007) by IAPSM and with Indian epidemiology Association Oration (2014). Besides he also delivered Ramamurthy oration for APIAPSM and Dr D N Pai & Dr MC Pathak Orations for Maharashtra IAPSM. He has written five books, Six chapters in books, published 22 monographs on priority public health issues and published more than 188 research papers in international and national journals. He was President of Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine in 2002. Dr. Garg has been awarded more than 90 research projects by WHO, UNICEF, PATH, USAID, GOI, FIGO, ICMR, INCLEN, NACO, BIRAC, Aga Khan Foundation, Population Foundation of India & UNFPA. He served as consultant to WHO (SEARO), DFID, CRS and various other international and national agencies on issues of public health concern. He also served as Chairman & members on various committees related to Public Health of Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, MCI, ICMR & WHO etc. He is Current Chairman, Programme Advisory Committee of National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi and also President, Voluntary Health Association of India. Elected Emeritus Professor by National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) for 2026-2030
